Three tons of earth constructed with plaster veneer on the 3rd floor of the Chicago Cultural Center. For the exhibition, “Material as Metaphor”
Ceramic wall relief 4ft x 6ft x3” relief
This a sculpture built on site at Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park. It is made of stabilized earth with a colored fresco veneer on the exterior. 12ft x 28ft x 14ft. The piece will weather away over time revealing objects embedded in the walls of earth put there by community volunteers.
This is a detail of the colored fresco veneer. Some of the connections made were first with the Earth from which the sculpture was made. Connections were personal with those people who worked together for the first time. A connection was made with the ancient Mound Builders of the region as well.
This is a view of the exterior of the sculpture. All fresco drawing was confined to this side to emphasize an interior/exterior relationship because the work is a metaphor for architecture.
This is a view of the interior. Objects that were embedded into the wall will be seen again in a few years by whoever happens by. In this way a connection will be made to someone the maker has never met.
This body of work is a combination of materials often juxtaposed with Clay. This allows me to do things with form that ceramics can not.
